Harvey Mackay popularized this phrase with his 1997 book, but I believe that this phrase has a much deeper meaning in the lives of each and everyone of us today. This concept is all about being prepared for the worst and not putting all your eggs in one basket. Too many of us still have no "spare tire" in the event that our life or career take a major turn for the worst. The downturn of the economy illustrates this perfectly.
TOO FEW WELLS HAVE BEEN DUG
I help big and small companies in my area devise advertising strategies and campaigns to promote their businesses. In doing so, I am constantly getting feedback from my clients on what's happening on the front lines of our economy. It's amazing how drastically things like an increase in gas prices or a decrease in the stock market impact the spending habits of most. While my family's wells (or Robert Allen's Multiple Streams of Income) have us better off than we've ever been despite the economy, most are worse off because they are still relying on only one income stream that requires 40+ hours a week in order to continue the flow.
TAKE ACTION AND START DIGGING
While it may be too late for some during this time of economic turmoil, I encourage you to take action and dig some wells for yourself. I encourage you to determine what's keeping you from digging YOUR well and make the necessary adjustments to your life to enable you to start digging! Read blogs like Tim Ferriss' Four Hour Work Week and change some of your paradigms about work and wealth creation. There's no time like the present for action. Let's none of us be foolish enough to think a crisis like this can't or won't happen again.
